Retrofitting Cold Aisle Containment System From EDP Europe

Cold Aisle Containment is a relatively simple and logical solution for effectively managing airflow within a Data Centre.  Whatever your key reason for deploying cold aisle containment, there are numerous additional benefits to be recognised.  Cost saving is usually a key driver for installing a cold aisle containment system, however, other benefits include:  Improved PUE, lower carbon emissions, extending IT equipment life, potentially fewer equipment failures due to overheating and aesthetically enhancing the appearance of your Data Centre as it creates uniformity in your aisles.

Whatever your reason, one of the key advantages for choosing an EDP Cold Aisle Containment solution is, it is a non-intrusive, bespoke, retrofitting aisle containment system, which can be used for hot aisle containment as well as for cold aisle containment, and can be customised to work with any combination of cabinet and room dimensions.  Many Data Centres have evolved over a period of time and as requirements have changed, this has resulted in a mix of rack manufacturers, cabinet sizes and cooling systems, EDP’s cold aisle containment is flexible enough to adapt to these irregularities.

Cold aisle containment encloses the cold aisle and prevents the mixing of cold air and hot exhaust air.  Doing so allows air to be returned to the CRAC units hotter, which significantly improves the efficiency of your building’s cooling system. Being able to regulate the airflow enables better control of the room’s temperature. Increasing the temperature of CRAC units by 1°C, provides a typical saving in the region of 8% of cooling power bills. In addition, the chiller units will make greater use of natural air temperature (free cooling), further enhancing energy savings. 74% of server failures occur in the top third of the rack where the temperature is traditionally hotter, cold aisle containment provides temperature equilibrium across all servers, no matter where they are positioned in the rack.

Not all simple solutions are equal. ‘Effective’ simplicity needs to be designed. A lot of time and attention is spent attending to the ‘detail’ of our cold aisle containment solution.  This attention to detail ensures our product is constantly evolving and we pride ourselves in providing the most effective cold aisle containment solution available.

Features & Benefits

EDP Cold Aisle Containment Features & Benefits:

  • EDP cold aisle containment retrofits to existing cabinets no matter what their height, width or manufacturer.
  • FM Approved roof panels that drop away in the event of a fire allowing fire suppression systems to access the aisle.
  • Variety of different types of infill panels, either solid metal or metal frame with Perspex panel that can eliminate gaps caused by building supports or missing racks. In the case of missing racks the panels can be removed when a rack is relocated.
  • Advanced door system with greater stability and full aisle opening for improved access.
  • Can be utilised in new build projects or retrofitted within legacy environments.

  • Cold air is directed straight into the servers, making them run more efficiently and reducing the risk of failure.
  • With EDP cold aisle containment cost savings can be made, of between 10% and 30% on current building cooling systems:
    • Power savings on room hardware (servers, switches, routers, etc.).
    • Control of room temperatures, humidity, airflow and balancing.
    • Improved U-space utilisation.
    • Reduces the building’s carbon emissions, improving eco friendly status.
    • Typical payback within less than 12 months.
  • As CAC is easier to implement it makes it ideal for retrofitting in legacy environments.
  • Primarily used in raised floor environments, however can be used in slab environments where in-row coolers are used.
