Data Centre Thermal Management

Solutions to Improve Data Centre Thermal Management

Thermal management plays a vital role in the operation of a Data Centre or Enterprise IT environment’s energy efficiency. Furthermore, most data halls use a hot-aisle-cold-aisle layout, and are cooled by cold air supplied by CRAC units.

Improving Thermal Management requires following Data Centre Airflow Management best practices. As a result it will enable the optimisation of cooling systems, that allows energy efficiency gains to be achieved.

Typically, IT equipment is cooled by supplying cold air to the cold aisle. In raised floor environments cold air is supplied through floor grilles, which should only be located in the cold aisle.  EDP Distribution supplies airflow management solutions that include KoldLok grommets and EziBlank blanking panels.

An alternative way to cool Data Centres is via water cooled solutions, this can be beneficial for high-density racks. Water cooling uses racks fitted with a Rear Door Cooler, which use a heat exchanger to remove the heat at source. Water cooling can also be used to supplement air cooling by using In Row Coolers, particularly useful in Cold Aisle Containment installations.

EDP Data Centre Solutions designs, manufactures and installs bespoke Aisle Containment Systems which are a proven solution in improving airflow management and helping to optimise cooling.
